In a momentous celebration marking the Silver Jubilee of the Diocese of Bongaigaon, the newly built Christ the Light of the World Cathedral was solemnly dedicated and blessed on March 2, radiating joy and reverence throughout the region. The cathedral, whose construction began just two years ago, now stands as a powerful symbol of unity and faith—commemorating 25 years since the Diocese was established, having been carved out from the Archdiocese of Guwahati.  This historic day coincided with the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) meeting, drawing all 15 Bishops from Northeast India to Bongaigaon. Their presence was especially significant, marking the first time since the Diocese’s inception that all regional Bishops were gathered in one place—their last collective visit being for the episcopal ordination of Rt. Rev. Thomas Pullopillil and the Diocese’s inauguration.  The Bishops were warmly received at the Cathedral with a grand welcome that featured a colourful procession of tribal dances, reflecting the diverse cultural identity of Northeast India. A crowd of over 10,000 faithful—including priests, religious sisters and brothers, and laypeople—came together to witness and participate in this landmark occasion  Clad in liturgical vestments, the Bishops entered the Cathedral in a reverent procession, led by Rt. Rev. Thomas Pullopillil, the Bishop of Bongaigaon, who presided over the Eucharistic Celebration. The Holy Mass was concelebrated by all the attending Bishops and a large number of priests.  During the celebration, Archbishop John Moolachira, Metropolitan Archbishop of Guwahati and President of NEIRBC, delivered the homily. He commended the Diocese for its steadfast faith and the tireless efforts of both clergy and laity in bringing the vision of the Cathedral to fruition. He emphasized that the Cathedral was not only a place of prayer but also a living symbol of spiritual revival and unity.  After the Mass, a felicitation ceremony honoured key benefactors and supporters who played a significant role in completing the Cathedral. The celebration was further enhanced by vibrant cultural performances, including traditional dances from the Bodo, Oraon, Santali, and Assamese Bihu communities, adding to the festive spirit of the day.  The event concluded with a fellowship meal held at the seminary campus, fostering a sense of community among the gathered faithful. The dedication of the Cathedral stands as a monumental moment in the history of the Diocese of Bongaigaon—a tribute to faith, perseverance, and collective devotion. The Cathedral now serves as a spiritual beacon for present and future generations.
