BAGANPARA

St. Thomas Church, Baganpara, was erected as an independent parish by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Robert Kerketta SDB DD the then bishop of Tezpur in 1981. Till then, it was under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Doomni Mission. Fr. Thomas Ekka was the founding father who endeavored at length for the integral development of the Mission. The Catholic community consists of mostly  of Orans along with a few Bodos.

Although Barpeta Road Mission had resident priests since 1933 it was erected as an independent parish only in 1936 by Bishop Louis Mathias.

The mission embraced the districts of Kamrup and Goalpara on the North Bank and Mangaldai sub-division of Darrang district.

Later new centres like Tangla, Mangaldai, Udalguri, Doomni, Bengtol, Kumarikatta were separated. With these divisions, Barpeta Road parish’s boundary is limited to the civil sub-division of Barpeta Sadar.

BENGTOL

Bengtol, dedicated to Bl. Michael Rua, was carved out of the parish of Barpeta by late Rt. Rev. Orestes Marengo SDB the then bishop of Tezpur. The new parish was officially inaugurated on 24th June 1966 with Fr. Joseph Zubizaretta, SDB as its first parish priest.

The distance from Barpeta and the future possibilities of large number of people coming over to Catholic faith are among the main reasons which led to the opening of the new parish of Bengtol.

Bengtol parish catered to the faithful of a large area covering practically the whole westren part of the present BTAD, including part of Goalpara district and extending to border of West Bengal and border of Bhutan on the North.

With a view to attend adequately to the spiritual needs of the large number of faithful in the territory of the Parish of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Gurubasha ,the territory of the said parish was divided and thus a new parish was erected on 21st February 2010 dedicated to Jesus the Good Shepherd.

The Catholic parish of Doomni, carved out of the territory of Barpeta Road parish, came to existence in 1972. It was established by Rt. Rev. Joseph Mittathany DD the then bishop of Tezpur. The Catholic community in Doomni area had its origin in 1926. When the Brook Bond company established the Tea Estate in Doomni in the year 1926, they brought big groups of Adivasi workers from Chotanagpur and Orissa.

There were several Catholic and other Christian groups among them. The Catholic missionaries began to establish contacts with them. With the creation of Catholic mission at Barpeta Road in 1936, priests from there began regular visits to the villages of Doomni area.

The Italian missionaries Fr. Attilio Colussi, Fr. Michael de Valle, Fr. Zanon, Fr. Bonomi, Fr. Marengo were some of the first Salesian priests from Barpeta Parish who used to visit Doomni in regular basis. Fr. Remo Morra, who became the Parish priest of Barpeta in 1953, visited often the villages of Doomni.

He constructed village chapels at Dangrigaon, Karamtoli, Bongaon, Tiklibanga and the Church at Baganpara. Baganpara became a Parish in 1981. In 1971, Fr. Morra built the residence of the Priest at Doomni. Fr. Chandi Edamalai SDB was the first resident priest at Doomni from the year 1971. In 1972, the Parish of Doomni, dedicated to Sacred Heart of Jesus, was officially inaugurated.

Fr. V.L. John joined Fr. Chandi and among other things, he had also worked hard to redeem the mortgaged land of several people in the area. Fr. V.L  John was the first diocesan priest to become Parish Priest. Fr. Mathew Thayil, Fr. Thomas Ekka, Fr. Sebastian Ayilookunnel, Fr. Thomas Pulloppillil and Fr. Francis Xavier Basumatary were the other diocesan priests who worked here at Doomni Parish.

The parish of Dotma was carved out from the parish of Bengtol and is at present under the diocese of Bongaigaon. It began on Jan 1, 1986 through the order of the then Bishop of Tezpur, Rt. Rev. Bishop Robert Kerketta SDB  with the appointment of Fr. Edward D’Souza as the first parish priest of Dotma.

The circumstance that led to the opening of the new parish was the tremendous increase in the flock of the then Bengtol parish which had nearly 86 villages under its care. The growth of the new parish of Dotma too was marvelous.

Kwilamwila was part of Bengtol parish till it was separated on 8th March, 2001. The patron Saint of this Parish is St. Peter the Apostle. Rev. Fr. Augustine Nattunilam and Fr. Jose Pandianparambil, two dedicated Capuchin friars landed here on 13th January, 2001 and stayed in a rented house of Mrs. Rina Narzary of Kwilamwila Bazar.
